This is the original NZR promotional leaflet for the Silver Star overnight all-sleeper passenger service between Auckland and Wellington. It depicts well-heeled (European) people in coloured drawings enjoying the service, with an emphasis on luxury and service unknown on NZR until this date.
It depicts the train with two types of compartment. Single-cabin Roomettes and Twin-cabin Twinettes, both with their own toilets and fold down wash basin. Twinette cabins have their own shower compartment, but Roomette cars have two showers at each end. The timetable was included (it had far more limited stops than the standard Night Limited service), along with layouts of Roomette, Twinette and Buffet Cars.
Rail fares were also published, with an Auckland-Wellington sleeper at $18 ($317 in 2023 prices). The buffet car is depicted as a full scale restaurant car, offering "Indian Curry" or "ham and salad with French Fried potatoes", then dessert with tea, coffee or cheese and biscuits. Spirits, lager, wine, sherry and cocktails are also available. The wider fold out part of the leaflet depicts an image of luxury travel and unheard of levels of service on New Zealand Railways. This would be the most luxurious train ever to operate on New Zealand rails, and would only operate from 1971-1979.
